Your first Cornix: connection, layers and basic keymap customization.

Connect Cornix to your device

With the keyboard facing you, slide each side switch to the left to turn it on, or to the right to turn it off. Turn on both halves for wireless use and charging.

A layer is an alternative set of functions for the same physical keys. Layer 0 is the base layer. Selecting a layer in Vial lets you inspect its assignments; the keyboard uses that layer when its assigned layer key activates it.

Type numbers on Layer 1

Select Layer 1 in Vial to view its numbers and symbols. In the illustrated layout, the top row contains numbers. Hold the key assigned to MO(1) to activate Layer 1 temporarily, then press the number you need. Releasing MO(1) returns to the base layer.

Type symbols on Layer 1

Method 1: Shift and a number

Assign a Shift key on Layer 1. Hold MO(1), hold that Shift key and press a number key to type its shifted symbol.

Method 2: Assign a symbol directly

Assign a symbol such as @ to an unused Layer 1 key. In the example, the position below the number 2, corresponding to S on the base layer, outputs @ while Layer 1 is active.

If @ produces a quotation mark instead, check your computer’s keyboard layout. For a Japanese JIS layout, select Japanese under Vial’s Keyboard Layout, then reassign the symbol using the matching layout. Keep the host layout and the keymap consistent.

Switch Bluetooth devices on Layer 2

In the beginner guide’s example layout, hold MO(2) to activate Layer 2, then use BT0, BT1 or BT2 on the left side to switch between paired devices. If wireless connections seem to change unexpectedly, check whether you have pressed a device-switch key and move it to a less easily triggered position.

Layer assignments vary with the loaded layout. Inspect your current keymap in Vial to find the actual MO and Bluetooth keys.

Optional: Japanese and English input

For a Japanese input setup, assign LANG1 and LANG2 from the ISO/JIS tab to suitable keys. These select Japanese and English input in the supported host environment.
